Kid-Safe Productions is a theatre company that deals with some pretty serious topics. Has there been any professional involvement in the creation of your Educational Programs?
Isn't my child too young to be learning about sexual abuse?

This is the most commonly asked question we receive from concerned parents. The answer is fortunately simple despite the understandable seriousness of the concern. And that answer is "NO" because the sooner we can expose our children to training that develops the necessary tools for prevention and awareness, the better equipped they will be when and not if, as statistics prove, 1/4 of our children are approached by an abuser before reaching the age of 18. Moreover, the play's content is very basic and no specific details or mention is made of any specific body parts that could make parents or children feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. Great attention has been paid by the creators of this program to bring the important points to the children in a very age-appropriate but effective manner.

What ARE the issues addressed in the child abuse play?

Issues presented in the play are basic self esteem messages which are very important in order for children to respect themselves enough to be able to take a stand in protecting their bodies. Here is a brief list of the topics discussed:
  • Personal Space--Discovering the space around us that belongs only to us
  • Feelings--Identifying the feelings we get (pos. or neg.) when people enter our personal space
  • Responses--Learning the best way to respond to the negative feelings
  • Disclosure--Understanding who to tell, when to tell and some other very important things about telling
  • We also cover luring techniques of potential abusers. Best of all, we blow bubbles, sing songs and talk to a unique lady-bug and special little frog - putting everything we learned all together into an easy-to-remember verse!

Are there follow-up materials provided with the plays to ensure our children really understand the messages delivered?

YES. We understand that just showing children a play is a good START only. A lot of what is discussed in the plays can easily be forgotten if it is not reinforced through another medium. With young children, we know that repetition is the key. Therefore, materials containing exercises and review are provided to both children and their teachers. The children are provided with a colouring work-book to complete with their teacher and parents; and teachers are given both play-specific discussion guides as well as important but more generalized information on the social issue being addressed. The exercises in the colouring books are most useful because they use a secondary learning medium to re-iterate the play's key messages. Lyrics and sheet music to the plays can also be provided so the kids can sing along in class ó adding yet another medium to their learning.

In addition, the songs and script to the child abuse prevention play Bugs, Bubbles and Blobs is available on a CD which each school receives for free with their regular priced booking. Schools can enter this CD into their library for future use as fun re-freshers.
